The Corner Bar has been a long
running tradition of recreational entertainment since the early
1900's. This fine neighborhood tavern is known nationwide for it's
excellent American food and wide inventory of fine liquors and barely
beverages. The Corner bar has been featured in several American
Brew Pub books, magazines and is often the topic on several "Pub"
internet sites. |

The Corner Bar originally began as a homestead
in 1893; because of its distinct location, across from the Hungarian
Recreational Center and in an almost all ethnic neighborhood (mostly
Polish, Hungarian, Slavic, German, Italian & Irish) it was thought
to be a great meeting place. The corner of Mills and Vine St. was
considered by many to be the "Hub of the Wheel" of the
neighborhood. Across the street from the Corner Bar in it's parking
lot was also the very first Micro Brewery in Kalamazoo, no it wasn't
Bell's. |
So it was born, Stimac's Recreational Center,
the very first bowling alley in Kalamazoo, a.k.a. the Corner Bar.
Certainly no one will say if any sort of sprits were served at that
time; our guess is that they were understanding that on both sides
of the building there was alcohol being served both legally and
illegally. But soon to come was prohibition which certainly slowed
things for the Stimac's. |

But by the early 1930's the laws had changed
and the Corner Bar was the first in line to get a regulated Michigan
Liquor License in Kalamazoo County. The Corner Bar with its 100
year legacy has had many firsts and has since become true americana
at its best and a valued community landmark. |
